Antibody results should not be used alone for diagnosis and must be interpreted in light of clinical manifestations and other test results.
Smith antibodies offer a highly specific, but comparatively insensitive, clinical marker for SLE. Their presence constitutes one of the revised American College of Rheumatology criteria, even though their overall presence ranges from 20% to 30% in SLE.
